
Class 5 GDL Basic Road Test

The Class 5 Operators license permits you to operate:
- a two axle single motor vehicle, excluding motorcycles;
- a two axle motor vehicle towing a trailer with one or more axles so long as the trailer does not have airbrakes;
- a moped;
- Class 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 type vehicles as a learner only;
- a recreational vehicle, and a recreational vehicle and a trailer so long as the trailer has a maximum of two axles and does not have airbrakes.
You must be at least 16 years old to qualify for a Class 5 GDL license. Class 5 GDL does not permit you to drive a vehicle with a seating capacity of more than 15, or to transport for hire.
You can schedule a road test either online (click above) with us at Registries Direct, by phone at 403.520.2000, or at our Registry. The road test is approximately 25 to 30 minutes long and requires that you demonstrate proficiency regarding: - Identification and operation of vehicle controls
- Right and left turns legally and safely
- School and/or playground zone times and speed limits
- Parallel parking; uphill/downhill parking
- Proper lane changing
- Controlled and uncontrolled intersections

Conditions of your probationary license include:
- Must spend a minimum of 2 years as probationary (GDL) Class 5 driver
- Not permitted to have more passengers than seat belts
- Suspended at 8 demerit points vs. 15 for fully licensed drivers
- Zero alcohol level
- Cannot operate a commercially
- Cannot serve as an accompanying driver to a learner

WHAT YOU WILL NEED....
Please bring your Learner’s license or acceptable photo I.D along with your interim license (if you have not yet received your physical Learners). In addition your vehicle must be in good working order with proof of valid registration and insurance.
